Piedras Blancas Light Station

Piedras Blancas Light Station, established in 1875, is a historic lighthouse located on California's central coast near San Simeon. Originally standing at 100 feet tall, the lighthouse featured a first-order Fresnel lens to aid maritime navigation along the rugged coastline. Over time, earthquakes caused structural damage, leading to the removal of its upper three levels in 1949, reducing its height to approximately 70 feet. The light station now serves as a historic park and wildlife sanctuary, managed by the Bureau of Land Management.

Visitors can participate in guided tours that offer insights into the lighthouse's history, architecture, and the lives of its keepers. The surrounding area is rich in wildlife, including elephant seals, sea lions, and various seabird species, making it ideal for wildlife observation and photography. The site also features scenic coastal trails with panoramic ocean views, perfect for leisurely walks and nature appreciation.
