Elephant Seal Vista Point

Elephant Seal Vista Point, located near San Simeon, California, is a renowned viewing area where visitors can observe northern elephant seals in their natural habitat. These seals, once hunted to near extinction in the 19th century for their blubber, have made a remarkable recovery due to conservation efforts. The Piedras Blancas Elephant Seal Rookery, encompassing about 8 miles of coastline, is now home to approximately 24,000 elephant seals each year.

At the vista point, visitors can watch elephant seals during various stages of their life cycle, including birthing, breeding, molting, and resting. The site features wheelchair-accessible boardwalks and viewing platforms equipped with educational panels. Knowledgeable docents from the Friends of the Elephant Seal are often present to provide insights and answer questions. The viewing areas are open daily from sunrise to sunset, free of charge, and no reservations are required.
