Black Star Canyon Falls

Black Star Canyon Falls is a seasonal waterfall set within the storied Black Star Canyon, a remote canyon in the Santa Ana Mountains. The canyon is rich in history, from its ancient Native American (Tongva-Gabrieliño) habitation and subsequent conflicts during Spanish, Mexican, and early American eras, to its later use as a coal mining site by the Black Star Coal Mining Company in the late 19th century. Over the years, local legends—including tales of hauntings and mysterious sounds—have added an eerie mystique to the area.

What to do there.
Visitors can hike through Black Star Canyon via established trails (starting at the trailhead in Silverado, CA), explore the rugged terrain, and enjoy the natural beauty of the falls when water is present (especially after good rains). The hike involves rock scrambling, creek crossings, and stunning views of the canyon’s wild scenery. (Hiking and photography are popular activities; however, caution is advised on the challenging sections.)
