Mount Wilson Observatory

This feels like you drove into the sky. You’re up in the San Gabriel Mountains above Pasadena, with crisp air, huge views across the LA basin (sometimes all the way to the ocean), and a historic observatory where major astronomy discoveries were made. It’s part scenic overlook, part science-history pilgrimage.

Walk the grounds and visit the museum + 100-inch telescope viewing gallery (open during public visiting hours).

Join a docent-led weekend tour (includes access inside the 100-inch dome; tours are walking and about 2 hours).

If you want the true wow-factor, book a Public Telescope Night (ticketed observing sessions; released in phases).

Tours / special programs / telescope nights: Paid (varies by program).

Visiting hours: Daily 10:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Parking: You need a U.S. Forest Service Adventure Pass to park because it’s on U.S. Forest Service land. Their map page notes $5 day pass / $30 annual and that you can buy passes at the Cosmic Café on weekends (or before you go).
Expect a bit of walking: an FAQ notes there are lower and upper lots and about a 10-minute walk to the center of the observatory; terrain can be uneven.

Cell service can be spotty or nonexistent on the way up and at the site; bring what you need.

It’s a narrow, winding mountain road—allow extra time.
