Mission San Gabriel Arcángel

This is one of the most important historic places in the LA area—an original California mission where a lot of early Los Angeles region history traces back. It feels like a peaceful time capsule: old stone-and-adobe church, courtyard, museum pieces, and gardens.

Mission San Gabriel Arcángel was founded on September 8, 1771 by Franciscan friars Pedro Benito Cambón and Ángel Fernández de la Somera, under the mission system led by Junípero Serra.

The mission is tied closely to early LA region history; it was founded about a decade before the Pueblo of Los Angeles.

The original site near the Whittier Narrows / Río Hondo area flooded repeatedly, so the mission was relocated in 1775 to its present spot closer to the mountains.

Paid (self-guided visit): $15 general admission; $10 youth (5–17) / college w/ID / religious; $12 seniors (60+) / military / first responders; 5 and under free.

Tue–Sun: 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM (last admission 3:00 PM).

An easy nearby option is the public Mission Playhouse parking lot (178 spaces), and the city notes it’s free on non-performance days.
