East Jesus

East Jesus is an experimental, sustainable, and educational art installation located in the Sonoran Desert of Imperial County, California. Founded in 2007 by Charlie Russell, a former tech industry professional, East Jesus transformed a trash-strewn patch of desert into a vibrant art community. The name "East Jesus" is a colloquialism meaning "the middle of nowhere," reflecting its remote location. Russell's vision was to create a world without waste, where discarded materials are repurposed into art. After his passing in 2011, the Chasterus Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, was established to preserve and continue his vision. Today, East Jesus spans 30 acres and serves as a refuge for artists, musicians, writers, and thinkers, providing a space to create and display large-scale artworks made from reclaimed materials.

Visitors to East Jesus can explore the ever-evolving sculpture garden, which features artworks made entirely from reclaimed materials. Each piece carries a powerful message, encouraging viewers to reflect on society, waste, and creativity. Highlights include a wall of televisions with painted slogans, a mammoth constructed from blown-out tires, and a mutant albino whale made from thousands of plastic bags. The art installations are designed to provoke thought and inspire a world without waste, where every action is an opportunity for self-expression. Guided tours are often available, providing deeper insights into the artworks and the philosophy behind the community.
