Marina del Rey Harbor

🌊 From Wetlands to Yacht Harbor
Long before yachts and paddleboards filled the water, this area was a salt marsh and estuary connected to Ballona Creek. The Indigenous Tongva (Gabrielino) people lived nearby, fishing and gathering in the rich coastal wetlands.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developers envisioned transforming the shallow lagoon into a major commercial port to rival San Pedro. However, heavy sediment, shifting sands, and complex engineering challenges made large-scale industrial development impractical. For decades, the land remained largely marshland.

After World War II, recreational boating surged in popularity across Southern California. Rather than pursuing an industrial port, Los Angeles County pivoted toward creating a recreational harbor.

1954 – Construction began
Engineers dredged millions of cubic yards of sand
Jetties were constructed to stabilize the harbor entrance
1965 – The harbor officially opened

At the time, it was one of the largest public works marine projects in Los Angeles County history.

Late afternoon into sunset offers the best lighting and cooler temperatures.
