Manhattan Beach Pier

When Southern California’s coastal towns were rapidly growing in the early 20th century, Manhattan Beach aimed to attract visitors and investors. The current pier opened in 1920, replacing earlier wooden structures damaged by storms.

Unlike most early piers made of wood, this one was constructed from reinforced concrete, making it one of the oldest concrete piers on the West Coast still standing today.

The pier was designed by architect Edwin Bergstrom, who contributed to several major Los Angeles projects.

At the very end sits the distinctive Roundhouse Building, now home to the Roundhouse Aquarium. The aquarium opened in 1970 and remains a small but beloved nonprofit marine education center.
