Salton Sea Beach

Salton Sea Beach is a census-designated place located along the western shore of the Salton Sea in Imperial County, California. The Salton Sea itself was formed in 1905 when the Colorado River breached an irrigation canal, flooding the Salton Basin and creating the largest lake in California. In the mid-20th century, Salton Sea Beach and surrounding communities flourished as popular resort destinations, attracting tourists for boating, fishing, and recreation. However, increasing salinity and environmental challenges led to a decline in tourism, leaving behind a number of abandoned structures and a smaller, resilient community.

Visitors to Salton Sea Beach can explore the unique desert landscape, engage in birdwatching—particularly during migratory seasons—and practice photography, capturing the area's distinctive scenery. While traditional water-based activities have declined due to environmental changes, the Salton Sea State Recreation Area offers opportunities for camping, hiking, and wildlife observation.
