About This Place
๐ŸŒŠ From Wetlands to Yacht Harbor
Long before yachts and paddleboards filled the water, this area was a salt marsh and estuary connected to Ballona Creek. The Indigenous Tongva (Gabrielino) people lived nearby, fishing and gathering in the rich coastal wetlands.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, developers envisioned transforming the shallow lagoon into a major commercial port to rival San Pedro. However, heavy sediment, shifting sands, and complex engineering challenges made large-scale industrial development impractical. For decades, the land remained largely marshland.

After World War II, recreational boating surged in popularity across Southern California. Rather than pursuing an industrial port, Los Angeles County pivoted toward creating a recreational harbor.

1954 โ€“ Construction began
Engineers dredged millions of cubic yards of sand
Jetties were constructed to stabilize the harbor entrance
1965 โ€“ The harbor officially opened

At the time, it was one of the largest public works marine projects in Los Angeles County history.

๐Ÿšค What Makes It Special
Marina del Rey is LAโ€™s โ€œbig boat harborโ€ moment โ€” yachts everywhere, calm water, and scenic waterfront paths that feel surprisingly peaceful compared to the rest of the city.
Itโ€™s ideal for:
A sunset stroll along the harbor
A casual lunch overlooking the water
Kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, or chartering a boat

๐Ÿ“ Things To Do
Walk the harbor paths and watch boats come and go (super chill).
Relax at Burton W. Chace Park โ€” one of the best harbor-view spots with picnic tables, docks, and seasonal events.
Get on the water โ€” rentals, charters, and boating experiences are signature Marina del Rey activities.
Family-friendly stop: Mother's Beach โ€” a calm, protected swimming area perfect for kids.

๐Ÿ’ฐ Cost
Walking around the harbor & parks: Free
On-the-water activities: Paid
Parking: Mostly paid public lots and meters around the marina

๐ŸŒ… Best Time to Visit
Late afternoon into sunset offers the best lighting and cooler temperatures.
Weekdays are easier for parking and feel more relaxed. Weekends are livelier and busier.
