La Brea Tar Pits is one of the coolest “only-in-LA” stops: an active Ice Age fossil site where natural asphalt still bubbles up from the ground. You can walk around the park and see the famous Lake Pit with the mammoth sculptures, then go inside the museum to see real fossils (dire wolves, saber-toothed cats, mammoths) and sometimes watch scientists working in the fossil lab.
