El Matador State Beach (Malibu)

This is the Malibu beach everyone pictures when they think “cinematic California”—towering rock formations, little sea caves, and golden-hour light that makes everything look unreal. It feels a bit like a hidden cove, but expect a steep walk + stairs to get down to the sand.

Bring a camera—this is one of LA’s most photogenic beaches.
Sit on the sand, watch the waves, and catch sunset.

Beach entry: Free
Parking: Small paid lot on the bluff (pricing can change; commonly posted as hourly/day rates).

Day-use lots: 8:00 AM – Sunset

Best time to visit: Weekday late afternoon → sunset for the best light and fewer crowds.

Malibu is easiest by car. If you’re using transit, plan around bus schedules and expect some walking.

No dogs allowed.
