Descanso Gardens

Descanso Gardens is a 150-acre botanical garden located in La Cañada Flintridge, California. The land was originally inhabited by the Tongva people over 10,000 years ago. In 1784, it became part of a vast rancho deeded to Corporal José María Verdugo by the Spanish governor. The property remained in the Verdugo family until 1869. In 1937, E. Manchester Boddy, owner of the Los Angeles Daily News, purchased the land, naming it "Rancho del Descanso." He cultivated extensive gardens, including a significant camellia collection. In 1953, Boddy sold the property to Los Angeles County, leading to the establishment of Descanso Gardens as a public botanical garden.
